What is Work Order Status?
Work order status is the current state of a work order in its lifecycle—e.g. requested, approved, scheduled, in progress, on hold, completed, cancelled. Statuses help teams track progress and prioritise. They are configurable in most CMMS.
What it means
Status flow (e.g. open → in progress → completed) ensures work is visible and nothing is dropped. Custom statuses can match your process.
Why it matters
- Status indicates where the work order is in the process.
- Common statuses: open, assigned, in progress, on hold, completed.
- Status changes are often recorded with date and sometimes user.
- Reporting by status shows backlog and workload.
Example in maintenance operations
Open = just created; In progress = technician is working; On hold = waiting for parts; Completed = closed with notes and parts recorded.
