What is Maintenance Dispatch?
Maintenance dispatch is the assignment of maintenance work to technicians—who does what and when. Dispatch can be manual (planner assigns) or supported by tools (board, mobile, optimisation). It is part of daily maintenance execution.
What it means
Efficient dispatch ensures the right technician reaches the right job with the right information and parts. CMMS and FSM tools support dispatch and status updates.
Why it matters
- Dispatch assigns work orders to technicians or crews.
- Considerations: skill, location, priority and parts availability.
- Technicians receive work on mobile or paper and update status.
- Dispatch boards and CMMS give visibility to planners and supervisors.
Example in maintenance operations
A planner assigns today's open work orders to technicians by area and skill. A field service dispatcher assigns emergency calls to the nearest available technician.
