What is Calibration?
Calibration is the process of checking and adjusting a measuring instrument or device against a known standard so that its readings are accurate. Calibration is a form of maintenance required for instruments used in production, quality or safety.
What it means
Calibration is often scheduled (e.g. annually) and recorded per device. Compliance and quality systems typically require calibration records.
Why it matters
- Calibration compares instrument output to a reference standard.
- It is often scheduled (time-based) and tracked per device.
- Records (date, result, next due) support compliance and audits.
- CMMS can schedule calibration work orders and store results.
Example in maintenance operations
A pressure gauge is calibrated annually against a reference; the result is recorded and the next due date set. A thermometer used in food production is calibrated quarterly.
