What is an Asset Register?
An asset register is a list or database of assets (equipment, vehicles, buildings, etc.) that an organisation maintains. It typically includes asset ID, name, type, location, criticality and key specs. It is the foundation for linking work orders and maintenance history to each asset.
What it means
The asset register is the backbone of maintenance and CMMS. Work orders and PM are linked to assets so that history and reports are per-asset.
Why it matters
- Register lists all maintainable assets with key attributes.
- Work orders and PM are linked to assets in the register.
- Location and type support filtering and reporting.
- CMMS includes an asset or equipment module that acts as the register.
Example in maintenance operations
A facility register: Asset 001 – Chiller A, Location – Basement, Type – HVAC. A fleet register: Asset 101 – Van 1, Make/Model, Odometer, Next service due.
