What is a Preventive Maintenance Schedule?
A preventive maintenance schedule (PM schedule) defines when preventive tasks should be performed—by calendar, operating hours or other trigger. It is the basis for automatic work order generation in a CMMS so that PM is done on time.
What it means
PM schedules are typically defined per asset or asset type. The CMMS generates work orders when due and tracks completion.
Why it matters
- PM schedule = frequency and trigger (time or meter).
- One asset can have multiple PM schedules (e.g. daily check, monthly PM).
- Schedules drive work order generation; completion is recorded.
- See also maintenance schedule.
Example in maintenance operations
Chiller A: filter change every 90 days; bearing lubrication every 2,000 hours. Each is a PM schedule that creates work orders in the CMMS.
