What is MTTR?
MTTR stands for mean time to repair. It is the average time required to repair an asset after a failure and return it to operation, calculated as total repair time divided by the number of repairs. MTTR is a common maintainability metric.
What it means
MTTR reflects how quickly your team can restore failed assets. Lower MTTR typically means less downtime. It is often reported alongside MTBF.
Why it matters
- MTTR = total repair time ÷ number of repairs.
- Lower MTTR means faster recovery from failure.
- Repair time usually includes diagnosis, repair and verification.
- See also: mean time to repair (full glossary entry).
Example in maintenance operations
Five repairs took 2, 3, 4, 2 and 4 hours. MTTR = 15 ÷ 5 = 3 hours.
